Tim Buckley’s debut album is quite unlike anything else he recorded in his career. Essentially a set of modest folk-rock songs, the album is one of simple pleasures. Nevertheless, it’s one of the most enjoyable records of Buckley’s career. “I Can’t See You”, the album’s opening song, is one of the album’s finest, with Buckley’s rich voice backed by the most unobtrusive of arrangements, although still dynamic. The song’s lyrics are a simple address to a lover, “Tell me what you want today/Don’t leave me in the air to hover/Sing it out” begins the song’s second verse, and although hardly Dylan-esque in it’s poetry and inspiration, it’s certainly well above average folk-rock. “I Can’t See You” is a mature, fully formed composition, and one which signalled his future promise.
