A&M Records seemed to have exhausted its stock of Flying Burrito
Brothers outtakes on Close Up the Honky-Tonks in 1974, but the continuing
posthumous regard for Gram Parsons caused the company to unearth another
seven tracks, six covers of country classics like "Tonight the Bottle
Let Me Down" and "Green, Green Grass of Home," plus a version
of the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women," all originally intended
for what annotator Bud Scoppa called "a pure, honest country album"
that the Burritos apparently never finished. To this half-of-an-album,
A&M added two tracks from Close up the Honky-Tonks and three Parsons
solo outtakes (with Emmylou Harris on backup vocals) licensed from Reprise
Records. The result, credited to "Gram Parsons/The Flying Burrito
Brothers," is a tribute to Parsons' heartbreaking tenor, especially
because the tracks are little more than underproduced demos. It's not
on par with The Gilded Palace of Sin, Burrito Deluxe, or G.P., but should
be of interest to fans.
